Okay, so last week was a bit manic, and things didn't go according to plan. The whole world was against me starting my new regime of dieting and exercise - including electronics failing on me, friends inviting me out, and, most of all, my own lack of self discipline.
The weekend was fuelled with going out with friends and gorging on lasagne, pizza, chocolate, wine, fizzy drinks, nuts, cakes - oh my word it was a gluttonous fest. I loved it. No, wait, I didn't. Aaaargh I'm so confused.
Anyway, I decided that Monday I would start afresh. Cut down on my intake, increase my exercise from nil to something, and monitor the progress. I’m sick of seeing all these “I Got Ripped in 4 Weeks” ads – they all look really, really fake – are they even the same people? – but I want to slim myself down.
Well, I started monitoring anyway... This is what I took in, foodwise:
Breakfast:
1 glass of water
Mid morning:
1 glass of water
Alpen cereal bar (Fruit, nut, chocolate)
Lunch:
3 finger rolls with liver pate and lettuce
Afternoon:
Cadbury's Boost
Handful of grapes
Apple
Early Evening:
1 Chocolate yogurt
Dinner:
2 slices of Margherita pizza
1 jacket potato with cheese
1 glass of water
Little tub of (3) Profiteroles
Later On...
50g plain chocolate
500g Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie
So, there was some good in there, and some very, very bad. A full tub of Ben and Jerry's? Naughty. What's worse, though, is that I know that there is another one in the freezer. That's what happens when ASDA does a "2 for £3" deal. Damn them.
I tried to increase my portions of fruit intake, again from nil - I managed two of my five a day. That's okay, I guess.
Exercise? Yeah, that didn't happen. But I've got a (fairly) legitimate excuse - I've got this awful pain in my side - feels like I've been broadsided by a truck. In actual fact, I think that I've been 'kneed' in my side by my wife when asleep, but, naturally, she's denying all knowledge of it.
Anyway, I did put on the Wii, just to get an overview of where I am and what I need to do. Here's the results:
Days since last on Wii Fit: 107 (oops!)
Current Weight: 13.13 stone (approx 183lbs)
Change since last session: +7lbs
BMI: 33.23 (Extremely Obese)
I've set a goal of losing 3lbs every week for the next 6 months - I want to lose a stone and a half (around 24lbs).
Okay, so again, a quick overview - I'm going to try to keep to this format of overview regularly:
Exercise:
Type / Length of time:
NA / 00:00
Fruit intake:
2 / 5
It looks like I've got a lot of work to do, and a lot of self-discipline will be needed. I'm going to need to seriously cut down on junk food intake, increase fruit and veg intake, and do exercise. The plan is to do twenty minutes on the exercise bike daily, and then half an hour of activities on Wii Fit.
That was Monday. This is Tuesday. I am the Dieting Man. I WILL SUCCEED!
Your support would be very much appreciated.
I'm dieting because I've turned into a bit of a heifer. My plan is simple. Eat healthy. Do exercise. I plan to eat more fruit, less junk. I'm going to do exercise, such as riding my bike, my exercise bike, and utilising my Wii and PS3. I can't do this on my own - I seriously lack motivation. So please, post comments, keep me going, keep me motivated, and let's see if I can shed this weight. I am The Dieting Man!

Why Do We Keep Paying Exorbitant Amounts of Money for FOOD?
Alrighty There People.
I'm quite angry at the moment. I went shopping last night, at my local ASDA, and I had a goal in mind - not just to get my weekly supply of food and necessities, but also to do a comparison.
You see, when we go shopping at places like ASDA, Tesco, Sainsburys and the like, we have a choice of three types of food: Brand name foods, such as Heinz, Wall's, etc; the supermarket's own brand of food, in nicely designed packaging; and the cheap stuff - SmartPrice at ASDA, Value at Tesco, and Basics at Sainsbury’s (I think those are correct) - these are just the food, in plain packaging, with it's description and nutritional information.
Now, the prices we pay for these differing packages varies greatly, but generally, the food is the same. So when I did my shopping last night, I made a comparison - of the branded foods, ASDA's own foods, and ASDA's SmartPrice foods. For the purposes of this 'test', I made a list of 20 food and drink items that may be bought in a typical week. I avoided other items, such as bodycare items - toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel, etc; and things that you can pick up in supermarkets, such as pots and pans, crockery, cutlery etc. I concentrated purely on food.
Here are the shocking results of the price difference between branded foods, ASDA foods, and SmartPrice foods:

If you haven't quite digested that, take a look at this summary:
And if you need any more help working out what this means, these charts may help you:
Now, I know that sometimes only Coca Cola will do, or you'd rather a tub of Ben and Jerry's than ASDA's own offering, but to be honest in the past I've bought branded foods, ASDA's own foods, and SmartPrice foods, and sometimes you just can't taste the difference.
So why, people, do we need to be so fashion conscious, and spend exorbitant amounts of money on brand name foods, when we could be saving hundreds - yes - hundreds - of pounds each year on something so simple as food.
Please feel free to discuss.

Day 06 - Monday 6th August 2007
Alrighty There People!
Well, it's been a while since I blogged, hasn't it. I know that I've got a bit to catch up on, but keep reading and it should be up to date quite quickly. It's actually now Monday 20th August, but don't let that put you off - I've kept good records!
This day started with me rising early and taking the wife to work. Then I lashed to my office and bounded - okay, maybe I exagerated slightly - walked - up to the fourth floor. That's six sets of steps, with 8 stairs in each set. Oh yes. I must admit, though, that each day that I do this, it gets easier. I do this twice a day - I refuse to take the lift - and it's getting easier. Not to mention the 40 press ups I do every morning - they're very easy now - I need to consider upping the ante on that score.
Anyway, on to today's incomings:
07:30 - 2 Weetabix with semi skimmed milk
09:10 - 1 glass of water
11:10 - 1 glass of water
11:20 - 1 apple
12:20 - 2 white bread rolls with corned beef and cucumber
13:00 - 1 glass of water
13:30 - 1 glass of water
21:50 - 1 large cookie
22:00 - Sweet and sour chicken with white rice
23:00 - Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
Okay, now you may be wondering why I had dinner so late. Here's what happened.
I finished work at 5.15. I went to pick my wife up from work, she finished at 6. We were both shattered. I said to her, "When we get home, let's go to bed and have a twenty minute nap. I'm not going to go on the sofa, I'm going to go to bed." She agreed, we both needed to have a refreshing nap. So we get home at about twenty past six, spend twenty minutes getting stuff sorted, and go to bed. I set my alarm on my phone for 7:10 - actually allowing half an hour. Jen wasn't impressed - she wanted more. We both turned our phones off so that we wouldn't be disturbed by messages and calls. Within seconds, or so it felt, my alarm went off. I turned it off. The next thing we know, it's dark, it's half nine, and our twenty minute nap had lasted three hours!
We obviously both needed the sleep, but it really felt like the evening had been wasted. In fact, we just wanted to go back to sleep, but we were both pretty hungry.
Let's hope that tomorrow is better!

Monday 19th March 2007
Arighty There People!
Well, it's Monday. The exercise bike is now out of the spare room, and in the passage. Unfortunately, I have not had the time to go on it yet - I had planned on going on it this evening, but I didn't get in from work until 6.15, and I had loads to do, which included updating a website, and watching two episodes of Prison Break... I'm going to try and go on tomorrow night, even though I generally don't get in until 9.30 on a Tuesday. Mind you, it's only twenty/thirty minutes that I need to do...
I've also decided that I'm going to walk to work twice a week. It's not too far, only about half an hour, but it's quite hilly, so should be good for me. More exercise is the key to losing more weight!
Mind you, I haven't weighed myself at all recently, probably due to the fact that I don't think I have lost any weight! Saying that, my watch has become slack recently - but who wants to lose weight on their wrist???!
Anyway, on to today's incomings...:
07:15 - Frosties with semi skimmed milk
09:42 - 1 small cup of water
11:22 - 1 small cup of water
11:40 - 2 brown bread rolls, with tuna and pineapple - nice
12:20 - Cadbuy's Caramel
14:20 - 1 small cup of water
15:45 - 1 small cup of water
18:20 - 3 mini coconut bites
20:45 - Pizza and chips
20:55 - Orange juice
22:30 - A few spoonfuls of Ben and Jerry's ice cream...
Okay, so I know that today wasn't fantastic, but I will improve tomorrow - I'm not going to eat ANY chocolate, biscuits, cakes or anything like that... I WILL eat the orange that I know is sat on my desk... and I WILL go on my exercise bike sometime before I go to bed!
Anyway, looking at sponsorship - I could really do with some sponsorship, or even some simple support! Come on people, let me hear your encouragement! I reckon I could easily get sponsorship from Cadbury's or someone like that, but that would kinda be against the whole dieting thing... So someone like Springs Healthclub or something would be absolutely fantastic. So if you're reading, Springs, (or someone who works there!), get in touch!
Anyway, until tomorrow,
Adios!

Friday 16th March 2007
Alrighty There People!
Well, end of the week. Get in! Of coruse, that means that the weekend is looming - and we all know that everyone lets themselves go at the weekend, diet or no diet. This weekend is going to be especially hard - I've got a leaving do to go to... Cue lots of cakes and sweet stuff.
Did I mention that I'm no longer keeping this blog at the weekend? It's going to be purely Monday to Friday now, unless, of course, I obtain sponsorship... hint hint HINT!
When I came home from work, my wife had managed to take the exercise bike out of the office and put it in the passageway - no mean feat, I tell you. So it is sitting there now, and I look forward to putting it to good use... soon....
Anyway, on to the takings:
07:35 - Onken Biopot Yogurt - yup, the whole thing!
09:00 - 1 glass of pure natural bottled water
10:45 - 1 glass of pure natural bottled water
12:15 - Beans on toast - lovely!
12:30 - 1 chocolate yogurt... oh oh....
12:35 - 1 small piece of chocolate swiss roll... ooops...
15:00 - black coffee
15:20 - 6 pieces of Galaxy chocolate - forced upon me...
16:00 - 1 glass of pure natural bottled water
19:00 - Pasty, brocolli, cauliflower, potatoes
19:10 - 1 glass of mixed fruit
21:00 - 1/4 pot of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream...
Okay, okay, I know what you are saying - and I agree, it wasn't a fantastic day, healthy eating-wise. But it was Friday, and everyone knows how bad Friday's are. Cadbury's MARKETED Fridays with their Thank Crunchie It's Friday, or something absurd like that...
Anyway, the forthcoming week will get better, I am more determined to work hard at this diet...
Until.. next week,
Adios!
